Which muscle actually gives out first?

The soleus — the deeper, flatter calf muscle that sits underneath the more visible gastrocnemius.

The distinction matters because the two work at different knee angles. The gastrocnemius crosses the knee, so it contributes most when your leg is straight. The soleus does not, so it carries almost the whole load when your knee is bent — which is most of barre.

Barre also asks for something the calf rarely does elsewhere: a sustained isometric hold at end range, sometimes for two or three minutes with tiny pulses layered on top. Running and walking load the calf in short, cyclical bursts with rest between. A ninety-second relevé is a completely different demand.

So the heels-dropping moment is your soleus reaching its endurance ceiling in a position it is rarely asked to hold. That ceiling moves — but it moves through repeated exposure, not through wanting it more.

Is it flexibility or strength?

Test it in ten seconds. Stand facing a wall, hands on the wall, and rise onto the balls of your feet as high as you can — one single rise, no hold.

If you can reach a high relevé for one rep, you have the range. What you do not have yet is the endurance to keep it there. That is a strength and fatigue issue, and stretching your calves will do nothing for it.

If that single rise is already low and effortful, ankle range may genuinely be limiting you, most often from a stiff ankle joint rather than a tight muscle. Try a kneeling ankle rock: knee driving forward over the toes, heel down, and see whether your knee passes your toes comfortably.

What Nobody Tells You About Pulsing

Pulses are not a gentler version of holding. They are harder.

A static isometric hold lets the muscle settle into a steady recruitment pattern with reasonably stable blood flow. Pulsing repeatedly loads and unloads the tissue, which restricts flow further and drives up metabolic accumulation — the burn you feel is quite literally that.

This is why the last thirty seconds of a pulse section feel disproportionate to the movement size. You are not being dramatic. That segment is genuinely more demanding per second than the hold that preceded it.

Two practical consequences. First, if your heels drop specifically during pulses rather than during holds, that is normal sequencing and not a technique fault. Second, the useful thing to train at home is the hold, not the pulse — building the endurance base makes the pulses survivable, while practising pulses alone mostly just makes you tired.

How do I train this outside class?

Three things, ten minutes total, three days a week.

Bent-knee calf raises. Stand with a slight knee bend, rise, and hold at the top for 3 seconds. 3 sets of 12. The bend is what shifts the work to the soleus.

Isometric relevé holds. Rise to your highest comfortable position and hold for 30 seconds. 4 sets, 45 seconds rest. When 4 sets of 30 feels manageable, go to 45 seconds. This is the single most direct transfer to class.

Single-leg heel raises off a step. 2 sets of 8 per side, slow lowering — 3 seconds down. The lowering half builds tendon capacity, which is what lets you hold height late in a long set.

Give it 4 weeks. Calf endurance responds quickly, and most people notice class feeling different by session six or seven.

Should I just push through and keep forcing the heels up?

Forcing height on a fatigued calf usually shifts the work into your toes and the front of your ankle, which is where cramping and irritation start. Better to accept a slightly lower relevé and hold it well.

Why is one heel dropping more than the other?

Side-to-side calf endurance differences of 15 to 20 percent are common and usually trace back to an old ankle sprain. Single-leg work is the fix — train sets to match the weaker side, not the stronger one.

Do grip socks change anything?

They help you stop sliding, which reduces the toe-gripping that makes calves fatigue faster. They do not add height. Useful, not transformative.
